Agartala airport is a domestic airport. IATA code: IXA, ICAO code: VEAT. It’s proposed to be an international airport in 2015. In January 2017 the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has undertaken a Rs. 438 crore project to upgrade the Agartala airport to international standards with high-class facilities. It is the 2nd busiest airport in northeast India after Guwahati.
Location: Agartala airport is situated in West Tripura district, almost 12 km away from the main city Agartala, the capital of Tripura, on the road itself called Airport road through Ushabazar, PIN - 799009. Coordinates: 23°53’24”N 091°14’32”E
History: Agartala airport is one & only airport of Tripura which was designed & built by the king of Tripura Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur in 1942. The place where the airport has built is called Singerbil, previously it was called Singerbil Airport.
The airport was used by the 4th Combat Cargo Group (4th CCG) of the United States army air forces tenth air force which flew Curtiss C-46 Commando transport aircraft over Burma during world war II.
Other than this there was another small airport in Khowai district, now it is closed.
Facilities: Like every other airport it has all the discipline, security & facilities. Luggage carrier, baggage scanning/x-ray, boarding pass counter, security check, waiting place, restaurant, smoking room, phone booth, bathroom. Medical facilities, wheelchairs, childcare facilities are also available. Some small shops can be found like handloom handicraft of Tripura.
Agartala airport has 3 main gates & one departure gate, one arrival gate, 2 boarding gates. Car parking area is outside. There is an auto stand outside the airport building to reach you any corner of Agartala & nearby.
How to reach: You can take an auto from Radhanagar stand or Agartala motor stand. It will cost around Rs.15-20 based on your luggage, it will cost more in reserve. You can take the bus also.
